ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the autobiography of Carolina Maria de Jesus, nicknamed Bitita, which includes details about her experiences of the farm. A man went to find a farmer who hires him as a tenant farmer. Carolina and her mother were going to live on the Lajeado farm, near Uberaba and the owner was Mr. Olimpio Rodrigues de Araujo. Carolina already understood the value of the land that knows how to compensate man's efforts. A tenant-farmer got sick and died. The farmer's wife, Dona Maria Candida, was very skinny, as if she were the descendant of a snake. Farmer's wife spoke with Carolina mother, asking her what she knew how to do. Carolia and her family worked on the farm for four years. After that, the farmer kicked Carolina family off his lands. Carolia cried with a heavy heart to leave their little house, the vegetables, and the jilo plants. Carolina step-father brought their family back to Sacramento.
