ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the autobiography of Carolina Maria de Jesus, nicknamed Bitita, which includes details about her experiences of her illness. Carolina heard that in Uberaba there were good doctors. When Carolina arrived in Uberaba, Dona Maria Leonaldo received her. Carolina told Dona Maria that Carolina had to cure her legs. Dona Maria advised her to stay at St. Vincent de Paul shelter, the sisters accept her. When Carolina arrived, she went to talk with Sister Augusta, who was the mother superior, for permission to go for a checkup at the Santa Casa, which provides free medical care to indigent patients. Sister Custodia told that the doctor visited the shelter every eight days. The doctor who examined Carolina gave her some medicine. The sisters said that Carolina wash the other patients' clothes for her medical expense. Carolina legs did not heal. Carolina got tired of that life, she told Augusta and return back to her hometown.
