ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the autobiography of Carolina Maria de Jesus, nicknamed Bitita. Carolina's mother gave her thirty thousand reis and with this money she is going to Ribeirao Preto to admit into a hospital. She arrived in Ribeirao and went along Saudade Avenue, arrived at the Santa Casa. They treated and bandaged up her sores and said that she come back in three days. Carolina remembered that Aunt Ana lived in that city, and she decided to find her. Her Aunt lived in Vila Tiberio, who observed her minutely and said, "She's a beggar who comes to my house from time to time asking for alms". Carolina went out, she went to Barbar's house, Aunt Ana's daughter. When Ana's daughter saw her, she shut the door. After three days in Santa Casa, they not allowed to admit her because her sickness is out-patient. Carolina looked for the highway, intending to return to her home town on foot.
