ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the autobiography of Carolina Maria de Jesus, nicknamed Bitita, which includes details about her experiences about the culture. Carolina became more intellectual, understanding that an educated person knows how to tolerate life's afflictions. Because she had taken lots of medicines, her legs were healing. If she rested in her own home, she can heal herself. Carolina was happy because the sores were healing. Carolina was scared when she saw the policemen. They stopped in front of her and said she was under arrest. She did not ask why she was being arrested. Her cousin Paulo got the twenty thousand reis and had she released. Carolina considers her cousin Paulo as her only relative. Carolina and her mother left the city of Sacramento and went to Franca. There is a struggle for her to live in Franca and she cannot work. Her mother got a job in Mr. Ignacio Calheiros's house. Carolina was left wandering.
