ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the autobiography of Carolina Maria de Jesus, nicknamed Bitita, which includes details about her experiences being a cook. Carolina went to work in a wealthy house be a cook. Carolina mother asked her to get together some money because she was going to return to Sacramento. The first day, the boss complained because food wasn't tasty. And Carolina did not know how to cook well enough. In the Santa Casa, they were looking for a cook and she applied. The sister hired Carolina, she asked for references, but her mistresses were farmers' wives. Carolina salary was Eighty thousand reis a month. Carolina learned how to make several dishes with Sister Irineia. Carolina was happy when she got a visit from the mother superior and a superior tell her that the food was well-prepared. Carolina thought about her life that was improving. When she got paid, she gave her mother fifty thousand reis, Carolina's mother returned to Sacramento.
