When Carolina mother beat her, she went to her grandfather's house. Her grandpa's house was so poor. Sia Maruca, Carolina grandfather's wife, was good. Carolina mother washed clothes each day and earned five thousand rei. Carolina gaze kept straying through the windows, watching the rich people eating at the table. Carolina life improved a little bit when her mother went to work for Dona Mariquinha, Jose Satumino's wife. In Mr. Jose Satumino's boarding house there lived a blind man, Mr. Epifanio Rodrigues, who was a beggar. Carolina heard about Saint Luiza who was the protector of the blind. A poor man must always be conceived, born, grow, and live with patience in order to tolerate the egotism of the masters of the world.
