ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the autobiography of Carolina Maria de Jesus, nicknamed Bitita, which includes details about her experiences about the blacks. Carolina thought Africa was the mother of the blacks. The whites, who were Brazil's masters, did not defend the blacks. Carolina great-grandmother Maria Abadia used to say, "The whites today treat blacks better". Those who were born here in Brazil were disgusted to live by exploiting the blacks. Carolina's Grandpa said that the Brazilians were good men, pure of mind, like the clouds in the sky. But, with so much fuss around blacks, blacks were becoming important, blacks and gold were things of great value. Portuguese pierce the little black girls' ears, they offer them gold earrings with the intent of regaining their trust. In confrontations between blacks and whites, no one tries to figure out who is right. And the black man always ends up being the scape-goat.
