ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the autobiography of Carolina Maria de Jesus, nicknamed Bitita. The city was flooded with men, cruising in search of whores. Carolina thought it was strange to see the whores wearing colorful clothing and exaggerating their make-up and adornments to attract men. And the girls were jealous and wanted to grow up to be whores and sleep with Jose Merendengo. The whores felt immense pleasure when the men got upset fighting over them. Carolina pleasure was to have a white girl beg her, "Bitita, throw a rock at that mango for me". Some blacks got sick from dancing so many sambas. Samba is the most popular Brazilian dance of African origin. Terror Carolina felt at the time of the feasts of St. Benedict with the blacks rushing around. Carolina wanted to be just like Jose does Patrocinio who helped free the blacks and even bought a Ford.
