ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some ideas for online organization and study skills, and then people turns to the best tools and practices for student note taking. Students basically need two skills to keep their online materials in order: good folder organization and intelligent naming conventions. It can be effective to mandate that all students adhere to this minimum level of organization and then also to allow students to create more sophisticated subfolders if that helps them stay organized. Few teachers would disagree that note taking is an important skill for students to master. Of all the computer skills people teach, online organization is one of the ones they are confident students will continue to use for the rest of their working lives. With small file sizes and free software, FreeMind has the major advantage that it is very easy for students to work with its files at home and in the classroom.
