ABSTRACT
This study began with a statement of the relationship between the earth and Balkan man and woman. It may be appropriate to return to that subject---now, however, with an emphasis not on past perceptions of the relationship between the earth and man but on how that relationship may be in need of rethinking. The previous chapter raised the question of the liberties and constraints of culture, how a specific culture or group of cultures---namely, the Balkan cultures---has simultaneously promoted and hindered the emergence of "higher men." To probe more deeply into this matter, we shall adopt what Warren Susman called an "ecological approach."i We shall reexamine the ways in which changes in culture, society, technology, the organization of territory, mentality, the economy, and the world at large have altered the ways in which the Balkan cultures and societies have functioned, now function, and should function in order to survive.
