ABSTRACT
The network consists of a backbone of computing power, software, and telecommunications. Its evolution has been so rapid that it caught even keen observers of the computing scene, such as Bill Gates, off-guard. The network we know today is the child of tremendous advances in software, hardware, and communications technology.
