With the collapse of the Gupta Empire in c. 550, imperial unity in India disappeared in favor of the diversity of regionalism. This change should not, however, be interpreted to mean that India plunged into chaos. Instead, one could interpret this new situation as a period in which ruling families in India, many of whom chafed under the yoke of the Imperial Guptas, were able to reexert their independence.
