ABSTRACT
Buddhism originated in India around 500 B.C.E. as a movement of followers of Siddhartha Gautama, a noble of the Shakya people who claimed to have discovered a transcendent consciousness called Nirvana, or enlightenment. He thereafter became known by honorific titles such as Shakyamuni (Sage of the Shakyas) and Buddha (Enlightened One).
