ABSTRACT
Most books cited in the footnotes are on the list below. Chinese newspapers and journals, especially those on the roster of abbreviations near the Table of Contents, were essential for this study because these are often less thoroughly censored than books. Other essential bases for this study were interviews in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Taipei, Princeton, and elsewhere.
