ABSTRACT

Assessment is essential in order to ensure good progression in children’s learning. There are two types of assessment: formative, which is ongoing assessment (assessment for learning), and summative, which is a more formal assessment at a given point in time (assessment of learning). Within primary languages, formative assessment is used much more in everyday teaching, although summative assessment can be useful. The assessment tasks, later in this chapter, could be used for formative or summative assessment.
