Speaking in the target language

encourages children to listen attentively and increases their concentration;

maximises opportunities for children to assimilate new language;

gives them the chance to use the language for a real purpose;

helps children understand their own language better through making comparisons;

reinforces skills and concepts, learnt in the mother tongue, through playing games;

encourages children to express themselves through mime and gesture; and

gives them a door into a new culture through learning rhymes, songs, poems and stories.
