ABSTRACT

In maintained schools in the UK, teachers' training continues in effect into at least their first year of teaching. However, they should try to see the induction in positive terms. A good starting point is to list teachers' virtues. They are likely to have to prepare a form of Career Development and Entry Profile in the final weeks of their training. It's fairly straightforward. Brilliant teachers continue to change throughout their careers. Virtually any Entry Profile is likely to fit a strengths-and-weaknesses pattern. General statements of strength are of some value in establishing teachers' credentials in their new job but aren't going to be as helpful to their ambitions as specific indicators of expertise or enthusiasm. For this reason, the Development Targets section is likely to be particularly helpful. There are three possible elements here: their generic virtues, as a newly qualified teacher (NQT); virtues specific to themself; and virtues that apply specifically to the job in question.
