ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the way in which an AI can integrate with Audio Description (AD) to assist description by allowing more time for explicitation and descriptive detail, as well as incorporating functional information to help AD user prepare for the performance. In future the move toward theatres using virtual programmes may lessen the need for the functional information in AIs for live events. AIs provide an opportunity to describe visual aspects of a production in more detail than can be fitted within the soundtrack. The shadow puppets are cut out of black paper. Cecile and her helper take them out of the drawers and slide them over the glass. In some cases the AI can also be used as a kind of glossary, explaining technical terms in advance, allowing the strategy of naming without explicitation to be used in the dynamic AD. This might be especially useful in description of camerawork, or for ballet with reference to particular dance steps.
