ABSTRACT

In our last chapter we saw the need to trace some fundam ental motives in m an’s conduct. W e discussed conation and its relation to feeling tone, b u t we are left w ith the question ‘W hy should m an desire to do certain things or strive in certain directions ra ther than others?’ Is he driven to them by inborn tendencies? Am ong psychologists there is a general agreem ent th a t m an does possess some impulses or tendencies o f an in - stinctive type (or a t least some strong innate ‘urges’ or ‘drives’) even if they cannot be labelled ‘instincts’ in the sense which some biologists understand th a t term . T o a considerable extent indeed the discussion as to w hether m an possesses instincts turns upon the m eaning which we a ttach to the word instinct, and it m ay be well to discuss some of these meanings first.
