ABSTRACT

Reasons fo r studying the psychology o f the unconscious.1 T he psychology of the unconscious was brought into prom inence some forty years ago by the work of Freud and others working w ith him , especially Ju n g and Adler, who afterwards broke away from Freud and followed independent lines. F reud’s doctrine of the unconscious had both fanatical supporters and violent opponents. T here is no doubt, to my m ind, tha t his views contain a great deal of speculative theorizing which cannot be substantiated by evidence, yet there are good practical reasons why teachers and social workers should study this psychology of unconscious processes; indeed, a comprehensive study of even elem entary psychology is impossible w ithout it.
