Self-assertion. Adler thought th a t F reud over-emphasized the im portance of sex as a m ain source of neuroses. A dler himself stressed the suprem e im portance o f the self-assertive im pulse; indeed, he w ent so far as to suggest th a t some activities of sex and courtship are partly a form of self-assertion showing itself in th a t particu lar way, and possibly some people collect hearts like Am erican Indians used to collect scalps. C ertainly pride in the possession of a fine m ate (or any m ate a t all) shows itself in the behaviour of m any.
