The nature o f sentiments. As we have already seen (p. 50), a sentim ent is a m ore or less perm anen t and organized system of emotional tendencies and impulses centred about some object or person. Examples of sentim ents are the following: a m an ’s love for his wife or child, his respect and affection for a friend, his devotion to a church or a political party , his patriotism . Such sentiments are suprem ely im portan t: for, in adults a t least, a sentim ent seems m ore frequently the determ inant o f action th an is any one individual instinctive impulse of the m om ent - im portan t as those are as fundam ental constituents of sentiments. Let us consider the natu re of sentiments m ore fully.1
