In C hapter I I I (p. 34) we have already given a brief introduction to the study of special abilities, particularly of those which enter into a pupil’s perform ance in somu im portan t group of school subjects or other activities, e.g., verbal, or m echanical, or arithm etical ability, various special m em orizing abilities, an ability involved in dealing w ith space relations, and musical ability. In this chapter we shall discuss these and other special abilities and their im portance m ore fully; bu t it should be understood tha t w hat we label a special ability m ay sometimes include two or m ore independent unitary functions, or m ay a t some future tim e be shown to do so.
