ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on leader characteristics that are particularly susceptible to refinement over time to the limits of one's natural ability and personality. Blue ocean leadership emphasizes the importance of right feedback and guidance in coaching leaders at various levels to perform appropriate strategy-grounded actions, and thereby hone their skills in performing the strategic actions. Continual learning means taking responsibility for acquiring new information, looking at old information in new ways, and finding ways to use new and old information creatively. Goal-setting skills have both scientific as well as artistic components. Scientific purposes define and classify concepts, construct useful theories, and predict the future based on those theories. Accurate, concrete data about the organization must be gathered using methods that can be routinized in function. Responsibility skills refer to the ability of individuals to take positions requiring broader decision-making duties and greater authority.
