ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide practitioners with a wealth of strategy and activity ideas to support pupils with language and communication needs across all areas of the curriculum. It also provides a range of strategy and activity ideas for practitioners to support pupils across the curriculum. The strategy ideas are sub-divided into: positive communication, universal strategies and approaches, and targeted strategies. Language development cannot be seen as separate from the delivery of the curriculum. When choosing strategies to meet individual needs, it is important to consider the whole context. The chapter considers how strategies and resources can be used at a universal, whole class level together with small group targeted interventions. Working in this way will be of benefit to other pupils in the classroom and will help to promote the general development of speaking and listening skills. It will also ensure the provision of meaningful, context-based language learning opportunities, supporting generalisation of skills into real life situations.
