ABSTRACT

The Children and Families Act 2014 sets out the core principles of the legislation. Those principles are: the views, wishes and feelings of children and their parents, and young people; the importance of them participating as fully as possible in decision-making and the provision of information and support to enable them to do so; and, supporting children and young people's development and helping them to achieve the best possible educational and other outcomes. The Children and Families Act and the resulting special educational needs and disabilities(SEND) code of practice, raise the expectations on all professionals from education, health and social care as to how they work with the parents of children with SEND. The SEND code of practice 2015 emphasises the importance of schools gathering information, and to include holding an early discussion with the pupil and their parents, not only to give information but also to draw on the parents' knowledge and concerns about their child.
