ABSTRACT

The relationship between EU law and national law is governed by the doctrines of supremacy, direct effect and indirect effect. This is a very important area as it determines the practical signifi cance of EU law in the legal systems of the Member States. The combination of supremacy and direct effect of EU law is most signifi cant: it means (1) that nationals of the EU Member States can invoke EU law in their own courts (direct effect) and (2) have confl icting national law set aside and disapplied in favour of the application of EU law (supremacy).
