ABSTRACT

Once I had completed the first draft of this book, I started to share the ideas in the book. In this afterword I wanted to capture some of the initial reactions of people to the ideas. The first reaction, surprisingly, to me anyway, was that the theory was welcomed by clinical nurses. When I presented the ideas to senior clinical nurses, they recognised that they often did not have well-defined models or theories, that the ones they used were not adequate and that they needed to support their work with theoretical perspectives. I was perhaps surprised because I developed much of this work with students who were often less engaged with theoretical ideas and more with the ‘doing’ of nursing. The senior clinical nurses I have spoken with all recognised the problems of family-centred care and the inadequacy of current nursing models which use adult theories.
