2.1 INTRODUCTION

Building economics as a subject is barely 50 years old. It has largely developed since the middle of the twentieth century with the building boom that followed the end of the Second World War. While the subject matter is not now entirely in the province of quantity surveying, its origins can be traced to quantity surveying practice. It can also be reasonably argued that authors of this subject have frequently had a background in this discipline.
