ABSTRACT

Is there such thing as a human interest that is not only universal but also an overriding, universal interest, aside from the interests in meeting our most basic material and emotional needs? If there is such an interest, what would it be? The three human sciences rarely examine this topic in a systematic way. Should it not be a critical issue in intra-and interdisciplinary debates? After all, a fundamental aim of the human sciences is to produce knowledge and policy recommendations that do not deviate from the most important human interests.
