ABSTRACT

Introduction If love is a many splendored thing, what are its many splendors? How do they come about? In this chapter, I will discuss the origins of love in early development. I will then turn to adult experience and consider the persistence of different strategies of attachment love and how these strategies relate to romantic love and lustful love. The success and persistence of adult love in its many forms comes into question with a roughly 50% divorce rate and the frequency of extramarital affairs. Many pairs (both heterosexual and homosexual) fail in the challenge to persevere in a long experience of a shared monogamous sexually active family life despite a traditional cultural pressure to do so. And many individuals succumb to a life of lust without love. I will consider many of the manifestations of love or its absence that are involved in adult pairings in general and finally in the transference love of treatment dyads.
