ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the changes that take place in girls' and boys' bodies during puberty, on the concerns young people often feel about these changes and on how the media influence how young people view these changes. The chapter shows how the body changes from babyhood and in adolescence by introducing the activity by talking about the changes that take place as one grow from a baby into adulthood. It answers children's worries and concerns about the changes that occur during puberty by giving each member of the class an index card or small piece of paper then reminding them of the changes that take place in their bodies during puberty. The chapter discusses how the media present ideals of femininity and masculinity by explaining that teenage magazines and the media in general present an idealised picture of what it means to be feminine and what it means to be masculine.
