ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on dealing with changes that may occur in young people's lives such as moving house or moving from primary to secondary school. It discusses the reasons why people move house and what you may feel when you have to move. The chapter helps to reassure children who are anxious about changing schools by explaining that it is natural to be nervous when they do something new and that many people are nervous about moving up to secondary school. It Introduces the idea of a 'Worries box' into which the children can anonymously put postcards saying what worries them about moving up to secondary school. Pick out the postcards randomly and discuss with the class what they are looking forward to, what their worries are and what they can do to reduce their anxieties. It explores how the children feel when parents separate. The chapter also shows how to establish good relationships in step-families.
