ABSTRACT

Working with parents and carers Working with parents/carers and pupils themselves is the key to effective provision, and one of the key principles of the 2014 SEN reforms. Working effectively with parents/carers is also the secret of reducing bureaucracy. If parents are confident about what is being done to support their child, they do not need pieces of paper. They can be your greatest ally in reducing bureaucracy, or – if you get the relationship with them wrong – they can undo all your efforts. Not least, they can exercise their legal right to request a statutory assessment for a possible Education, Health and Care Plan that will generate a blizzard of paperwork for you and the local authority.
