ABSTRACT

Daniil Kharms (Даниил Иванович Ювачёв) (1905-1942) was an early Soviet-era absurdist poet and writer, and a member of the group ОБЭРИУ (Объединение Реального Искусства). He was a tragic and eccentric fi gure, who struggled to make ends meet and managed to publish only his children’s books during his lifetime. His other works became widely known only in the 1970s. He was arrested twice and died in a psychiatric hospital in St. Petersburg in 1942, most likely from starvation.
