ABSTRACT
<abstract>This chapter ‘sets the scene’ for the subsequent content of the book. It begins by drawing together coaches’ definitions of sports coaching with those presented in the literature and considers the various domains in which coaches’ work. The chapter continues with a brief history of how coaching has been investigated, paying attention to models of coaching and notions of ‘effective’ and ‘successful’ coaching.</abstract>
