ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 challenges media and academic portrayals of performance coaches which have positioned their work and careers as seamless and unproblematic – a ‘one size fits all’ series of linear stages and milestones. Such portrayals of coaches’ careers fail to adequately reflect the career ‘realities’ experienced by coaches. Therefore, this chapter features the ‘voices’ of elite and professional coaches and the various turning points they experienced in the processes of becoming a coach, being a coach and leaving coaching.
