ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a case study of Miquel who was born and raised in a small, rural town in Northern New Mexico. From about eighth grade until his sophomore year in high school he was really affected by obsessive-compulsive disorder. Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) really began to surface when he was 16-years-old and this is when he really began to focus on his face. His BDD had ways of being very intense at times, but then at other times it would decrease for a while. Other BDD issues began to appear, such as wondering if he could do something about his nose. Miquel spent three days in the hospital's intensive care unit. It was a scary experience but it was sadly not enough to make his deal with the BDD once and for all. Through continual practice and usage of behavioral therapy, the BDD is no longer an intrusion in his life.
