ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the things women found most helpful in their treatment, what they found unhelpful and wished could have been different, and what they found most difficult in the recovery process. They also addressed what they wished their diabetes clinicians understood about eating disorders. How to design effective treatments for such a high-risk medical and psychiatric problem is a critical question that needs addressing through further research. The majority of women held the strong belief that it was most helpful to work with treaters that either understood type 1 diabetes and its treatment or were open to learning about it. Some of the women identified finding life early in recovery to be quite difficult, because they reported not feeling like they knew who they were without their eating disorder. The chapter focuses on the women's opinions about the mental health treatment they received for their eating disorder and aspects of their recovery process.
