ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in this book. The book on European Community (EC) politics can devote to the domestic politics dimension in ten member states, there seems nonetheless to be inadequate coverage of the vital domestic inputs into Community decisions. The main focus of attention was found to be committee scrutiny, reflecting the specialisation inherent in the German legislature. The Federal Government's approach to Community matters has been to work from the assumption that they are an integral part of domestic policy. The reason for the separate International Social Policy Division was found to be the fact that Community developments were closely related to those in the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The focus of the Bundestag's work generally is on committee work. Yet, with one or two reservations, the case studies demonstrated the dispersed nature of policy discussions, which were largely conducted in specialist terms.
