ABSTRACT

One of the reasons why left and right have the emotional and moral nuances they bear in all cultures derives from the facts of human anatomy and neurology. The degree to which elements in this area have a structural influence on neurological patterns is perhaps uncertain, although there do seem to be at least superficial correspondences between the two. The binary foundations of Levi-Strauss' perception of myth can be explained in terms of a 'neurological dialectic' which is the interaction of the two hemispheres of the brain. The brain and its functions have long been recognized as being bilateral. The left hemisphere of the brain relates most closely to the right side of the body, and the right hemisphere to the left. Donald pointed out that phonology the foundation of speech is lateralized on the left in spite of its dependency on the facial-muscle control required from both hemispheres.
