ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 continues the arguments developed in Chapter 1 about the performative nature of heritage, by bringing together debates over the politics of recognition and the nature of affect and emotion. I draw on the politics of recognition to extend my arguments about the political nature of heritage but also to inform the discussion of performances of both recognition and misrecognition, developed and discussed in later chapters, in particular in Chapters 12 and 13, respectively. Both Chapters 1 and 2 develop the theoretical framework applied to understanding the wider social and political consequences of how visitors use museum and heritage sites.
