ABSTRACT

Central to the analysis of higher education innovation are the following themes, many of which often overlap: internationalization, institutional imperialism and expansion, Internet instruction and programs, "for-profit" institutions, and "local town and gown" initiatives. Innovation in the 21st century has included internationalization. One can readily understand the argument that such institutions as Yale and New York University have the resources and stature to build new campuses overseas as part of an extended, serious commitment to the internationalization of higher education. This chapter focuses on the kinds of innovations and expansions that are for the most part incidental to colleges' and universities' commitments to diversity and social justice. For-profit colleges and universities (FPCUs) have long been a part of American higher education. The chapter provides a summary of developments and trends in innovation included a bill of particulars in which FPCUs were cited, usually critically and negatively, for disproportionate reliance on federal student aid funding.
