ABSTRACT

In relation to the founding of psychoanalysis, Balint is part of the third generation. He follows on from Ferenczi, who himself entertained tumultuous relations with the ‘founding father’. This distance from the origins of psychoanalysis, and his very ecumenical way of thinking, enabled Balint to explore new theories and to take an interest in the impact of psychoanalysis outside the field of the classic psychoanalytic cure.
