ABSTRACT

Education was once the province of the elite; it had to be taught one-on-one and only the most privileged could access it. Because of the variety of ways of getting the raw knowledge, people can focus learning energies on the types of environments that build collaboration. Pima's school ought to be an active community center that is part of a regional community learning network that is linked to the higher education center, research centers, social networks, other communities, other schools and networks of learners, mentors, teachers and older and younger students. The money people pay for the software pays for the cost of development. The industrial revolution required that education be made widely available but this education was limited to following a set of rules and directions. Poor people will take whatever resources are at hand and make use of them-even, as the Grameen experiment shows, if that resource is in another language.
