Hazlitt was advocating a version of Romanticism which avoiding conflating self-creation with the elevation. Rather than manage one’s experience too obsessively and intensely, it is better to let things be in themselves awhile. The mistake of Romanticism is the attempt to organize the world as a subaltern to one’s own individuality.
