ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book highlights the therapeutic elements of the theory and practice that are particularly relevant for working with challenging youth. It describes a variety of experiences and resources, multiple theoretical models have been particularly useful in mapping strategies for connecting and intervening with challenging youth: reality therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapies, systems theory, solution-focused therapy, humanistic psychology, collaborative problem solving, dialectical behavior therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches. Over the past three decades, professionals have challenged this assessment that psychopathy is rare among youth. Another major influence has been the work of Fritz Redl and his colleagues, whose innovative ideas laid much of the groundwork for the treatment of challenging youth. The book provides some important concepts from popular authors such as Carol Dweck, Stephen Covey, and Rabbi Harold Kushner who have focused their writings on relationships and the nature of success.
