ABSTRACT

Interpersonal learning and social skill development are two interrelated areas that are particularly important for challenging youth as they often lack the necessary skills to effectively communicate their needs to peers and adults. Challenging youth need to be surrounded by adults with the knowledge, flexibility, and patience to help them develop the necessary cognitive flexibility, frustration tolerance, and problem-solving skills. Collaborative problem solving (CPS) is the model developed by Ross Greene based on the central premise that most kids would do better if they could do better. Aggression Replacement Training (ART) consists of three coordinated interventions. The first component, Structured Learning, involves a series of social learning instructional procedures such as modeling and role playing, and is based on the social learning theory of Albert Bandura. The second component, Anger Control Training, was developed by Feindler and her research group. The third component, Moral Education, is based largely on the pioneering work of Lawrence Kohlberg.
