ABSTRACT

Problems surrounding the translation of words connected to meaning continue to be the focus of discussion in Cahier 5. The seventh paragraph of Benjamin’s text introduces the verb meinen, which means ‘to mean’ in the sense of ‘to intend’ or ‘to have an opinion, to think’. In its contemporary usage the related noun Meinung means ‘opinion’, but Benjamin uses it in ‘The Task of the Translator’ in the sense of ‘meaning’.
