ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concept discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book captures some of the domestic wisdom exhibited by Australian and New Zealand economists over the last century. It examines some of the contributions to knowledge by Australian and New Zealand economists in the context of their own economy. Craufurd Goodwin, who has written two books on the history of Australian economic enquiry, suggested that if further study was contemplated on the subject it should consider a broader canvas than just surveying the work and thought of local economists. The book attempts such a task by considering how politicians, economic journalists and some social scientists exerted influence on economic thought or, at least, its dissemination. Goodwin also helped the future historian of economic ideas by asking one to consider how two vibrant economies were built far from Europe and, how economic and social justice was achieved in these two now ethnically diverse nations.
